IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER
Monitoring Requirements Not Met for City of Sanford;
PWS ID #3590205
We are required to monitor your drinking water for specific contaminants on a regular basis. Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether or not our drinking water meets health standards. During the monitoring period for December 2022 we did not monitor for Total Coliform Bacteria and therefore cannot be sure of the quality of our drinking water during that time. The City of Sanford is required to collect and test 80 drinking water samples from locations throughout the City monthly. There were no problems with 75 of the 80 samples that were collected and tested for this period - they tested satisfactory. The issue was with the other 5 samples. When they were tested, they were out of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s (FDEP’s) acceptable “hold time”, which is 30 hours. “Hold Time” is the length of time from when a sample is collected to when it is tested. The results for those 5 samples would have been acceptable, had they been tested within the allowable hold time. However, because they were not, FDEP rejects those samples as being not reliable, and so they consider the samples as not having been taken.
Total coliform bacteria are generally not harmful themselves. Coliforms are bacteria which are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially-harmful, bacteria may be present.
What should I do?
There is nothing you need to do at this time.
What happened? What is being done?
What happened? Laboratory personnel did not test 5 of the samples before the required “hold time” had expired. Additionally, City personnel who received the sample test results misread the time that the laboratory had written down that the samples were tested.
What is being done? City personnel will look closer at the dates and times on all laboratory sampling forms and check with the lab on any questionable information on these forms. The laboratory has implemented a program where a minimum of two laboratory employees will review all sampling forms to ensure compliance with FDEP’s rules and regulations.
For more information, please contact Richard Casella at (407) 688-5095 or P.O. Box 1788, Sanford, Fl., 32772.
