Children can climb heights at summer camp

The Aiguille Rock Climbing Center in Longwood has offered a Summer Climbing & Challenge Camp since 1997, where campers can learn different climbing skills including bouldering, knot tying, climbing basics, safety techniques and other skills.

Climbers of all skill levels can experience the sport in this indoor facility under counselor supervision. The camp is designed for children 6 to 16, and will begin June 14. Campers will have access to 25 different walls.

“We want the kids to come in and have that kind of thrill factor; Florida is a flat state,” said Aubrey Wingo, camp coordinator.

During the nine-hour camp, children will spend nearly half of their time climbing. When the children aren’t climbing they can watch movies, make arts and crafts and take part in camp games to cool down.

“Schedules are flexible. If the kids want to climb we can set up a new game,” Wingo said.

Through climbing, campers will learn trust, teamwork, respect, patience and other values.

“There’s a huge trust factor for one kid to hold a rope for another,” Wingo said.

There are two experienced counselors on the floor at all times. Upon completing at least five full days of activity and instruction, campers will be given a certificate of completion and a group photo. The rock-climbing center is at 999 Charles St., Longwood.

For schedule details, see the summer camp guide on this page or call Wingo at 407-332-1430.
