Elks announce contest winners

SANFORD — Celery City Lodge No. 542 and Evergreen Temple No. 321 Order of Elks of the World held its local oratorical contest. The Education Department of IBPO Elks of the World continues its firm support of the education of our youth.

On Saturday, March 8 at the Allen Chapel AME Church, students from various Seminole County schools gave their orations of various speech titles selected by each student.

The program for the evening was presided over by PSP Shirley Wynn. Hymn: “A Charge to Keep I Have.” Scripture: Psalm 128 by PGDR Retha Baker; prayer by Brother Freddie Hudson. The welcome was extended by Lovisa Strickland. The statement of contest was made by PGDR Gail McQueen. After the orations and the judging, local education director Freddie Hudson and directress Retha Baker gave the results.

The winners are: First place — Shanikiquia Howard; second place — Amber Pearson; third place — Keesha Ford; honorable mention: Shaquita Peterson.

The winner, Shanikiquia, will compete in the district contest to be held next month. Willie Hooks Jr., exalted ruler; Anne Newell, daughter ruler.
