The YELDA 2007 Summer Program ends at the Goldsboro Front Porch, Inc.
The Program began June 4 and ended August 3 with 10 students from the Goldsboro Community and surrounding areas working at businesses throughout Sanford for nine weeks.
The Program was designed to offer youth living in the Front Porch Community professional development opportunities and summer employment. The qualifications to enter the program were: you must be able to work according to state law, must be in grades 9-12, must be computer literate, income must be at or below Seminole County median income, students must be drug-free, must have maintained at or above a 2.0 GPA, and must write a one page essay and fill an application.
The YELDA students had an opportunity to work at different work sites throughout Sanford. The work sties that partnered with Goldsboro Front Porch YELDA’s program were: Westside Boys and Girls Club, Central Florida Freedom School, Law Office of Victoria Anderson, Law Office of Timothy Dave, Law Office of Mandy Maloy-Pavlakos, The McLain, Pierce and Associates, Merthie Daycare, New Life Christian Academy and the Sanford Chamber of Commerce.
For most students this was their first time working on a job. Not knowing quite what to expect they learned very quickly. As a result from the summer work opportunities some students have expressed that they would like to pursue the line of work they experienced this summer when they graduate and finish college. As a result from the partnerships some worksites have offered students jobs after the summer program ended.
Shalonda Young, Project Coordinator for the Goldsboro Front Porch YELDA’s summer Academy says she thoroughly enjoyed working the program it was indeed a new experience for her. She watched as students matured into young professionals.
Thursday, August 9, the YELDA’s met and greeted everyone who had the opportunity to be involved in the 2007 summer program held at the Goldsboro Front Porch, Inc. and the Dr. Velma H. Williams Community Resource Center, 1213 West 13th Street. August 10-12 the completion of the 2007 summer academy was held at the Double Tree Hotel, Orlando.
The Youth Summit is an event where all students are required to attended where they can share their work experiences with other youth from all of the Florida Front Porch Communities.
Project Coordinator Young extends special thanks to the office of Urban Opportunity, Tallahassee, Goldsboro Front Porch Chairman Vernon McQueen, the Council Commissioner, Vice Mayor Dr. Velma H. Williams, all of the worksites partners, students and parents for a fantastic summer.
