Sorority holds scholarship dinner

SANFORD — An elegant evening of Rhapsody in Red was presented by the ladies of the Sanford Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Saturday evening, guests enjoyed a fun-filled, entertaining evening’s gala for scholarships 2007.

Ms. Sharron Riggins, vice president of the Sanford Alumnae Chapter extended a gracious welcome, and the invocation and blessing of the dinner was given by Angela Dixon.

A delicious dinner was served with the menu of chicken Florentine, salad with a choice of ranch or vinaigrette dressing, rolls, butter, garlic smashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, iced tea, coffee, and chocolate mousse cake.

The Sanford Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on May 4, 1984 by a group of concerned Delta women who saw the need for public service within the Sanford community.

Thus they became a link in the Southern Region of Delta’s National organization.

Delta’s Five Point Program thrusts, embodies economic development, educational development, political awareness, mental health, international awareness and involvement.

The Sanford Alumnae Chapter paid tribute to their Delta Dears, their committee sorors, with years of dedicated service to Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. They are the ladies who help maintain harmony and integrity with their beloved sisterhood, indeed keepers of the tradition with years of wisdom in Delta, and always making a special point to let others know about love and generosity.

They always show up, they show out. They are Dedicated, Energetic, Active Respected (DEARS).

These Delta Dears were honored: Shirley W. Allen, Shirley Baker, Elnora Holt, Barbara Johnson, Lenora Mobley, Luella Peniston and Sylvia H. Stallworth.

Honor was paid the chapters’ past presidents, sorors Shirley Wynn Allen, Ella Wiggins Robinson, Sylvia H., Stallworth, Benita T. Brown, Elnora G, Holt, Lillian McGill-Jordon, Shirley K. Baker, Barbara Johnson and Janice Hanley.

The new chapter President, Mrs. Arnita Walker Washington thanked those dedicated leaders for their past dedication and leadership of the chapter.

The gala evening continued with guests dancing and enjoying the “Oldies” and latest musical sounds by the Busstop, Tampa Bay’s premiere top party band.

Highlight of the evening was the stroll by the Deltas, and the sweetheart song sung by all of the Delta sorors.

The Sanford Alumnae Chapter’s 2007 gala committee extends a hearty thank you to those guests, friends and well-wishers who helped make this 2007 gala a success. Committee members were Arvis Harmon, chairperson, Felicia Cook, Dana Grant, Valene Hartsfield, Berta Robinson and Ella Robinson.

Winners of the grand prize, a weekend for two at the Hilton Altamonte Springs, were Angela Dixon, first prize, and Quinton Byrd, second prize.

The 2007 scholarship recipients are Sherquana Charles, 2007 graduate of Lake Brantley High School with a GPA of 4.0.

She aspires to attend St. John University and major in business.

Jasmine Kilgore, a graduate of Seminole High School with a CPA 3.3. She aspires to attend Technical School and major in Digital/Animation Technology.

Martice Pitts, a graduate of Seminole High School aspires to attend Florida A&M University and major in business. She has a GPA of 3.6.

Renell Tonge, a graduate of Seminole High School with a GPA of 3.3. She plans to attend the University of South Florida and major in nursing.
