BOATOBERFEST

Two weekends of sailing fun are planned for the Smyrna Yacht Club’s first Boatoberfest celebration, combining The Precision 15 Challenge this Saturday, October 13, followed by the Ultimate Michelob Cup downwind pursuit race on Saturday, October 20.

THE PRECISION 15 CHALLENGE _ The Yacht Club’s fleet of 4 wing-keel Precision15s will be raced by local Sea Scouts, members of the Halifax Sailing Association, and SYC Sailors in a series of “round the buoys” races. Six races during the morning and afternoon of Saturday, 13 October, will determine which area sailors earn bragging rights to this inaugural challenge. Each club will compete in a total of 4 races in the round robin. The course will be a triangle on the Intracoastal Waterway across from the Club’s Tiki Bar by Mile 847.5 -- Green Marker 45. Trophy presentations will be made to the winning club team, as well as an overall trophy for the best skipper.

THE MICHELOB CUP _ A long-standing tradition, Smyrna Yacht Club has hosted the Michelob Regatta each October since 1999 attracting between 20 and 30 participating boats from across Central Florida and is a notable feature on the Indian River. This downwind fun race is sailed between the Smyrna Yacht Club and Mosquito Lagoon on the Intracoastal Waterway and runs a distance of about 10 miles. The direction – either racing north or south -- is chosen to create a downwind race, which allows many of the boats to fly their colorful spinnakers. A staggered start is planned so that as many boats as possible will finish the race together – a great spectacle.

The Notice of Race and entry forms are available on line at www.smyrnayachtclub.com. Entry forms can also be picked up at the Smyrna Yacht Club (1201 South Riverside Dr., New Smyrna Beach, phone: 386-427-4040) front desk. Participating sailors do not have to be members of any club. Questions about Boatoberfest, contact Dave Smith, 386-426- 2800 or at arkell@cfl.rr.com.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

The No. 8 UCF women's soccer team saw its seven-game winning streak at the UCF Soccer Complex snap on Sunday with a 2-1 loss to SMU. Despite a second-half rally, the Knights (10-3-1, 4-2) couldn't pull off some last-minute heroics to prevent the Mustangs (6-6-2, 2-2-2) from nabbing their first conference road win of the season.

SMU went on the board first in the 17th minute when Mallory Baum's corner kick found Olivia Elliott in a scrum in front of UCF's net. Elliott snuck the ball past Lianne Maldonado for fourth goal of the season.

Rikki Clarke added an insurance goal for the Mustangs in the 54th minute off a double-assist from Shelby Redman and Baum. UCF keeper Connie Organ came out to meet Clarke, but Clarke sent the ball to the far post before Organ could get a hand on it.

UCF furiously tried to score and broke through just before the 82nd minute when a ball was cleared from in front of the SMU net to Sophie Howard, who was waiting at the top of the box and fired in her second goal of the year.

The Knights tallied the most corner kicks a UCF squad has drawn in a match in five years, and had a prime opportunity to knot the game with 10 seconds remaining off their 14th and final corner kick of the day.

Tishia Jewell sent a ball into the box that Alex Piercy headed forward to Madison Barney. Barney's header looked like it was headed for the back left corner of the net before SMU's keeper Lauryn Bodden jumped to snatch the ball and hold on for the Mustangs' win.

On Friday, UCF had posted its fourth-straight shutout victory with a 2-0 decision over Tulsa.

Due to a heavy rainstorm that soaked Orlando for much of the afternoon, the majority of the first half was a back-and-forth battle but UCF maintained an edge with five shots on goal.

The Knights had a great look at the net in the 37th minute as midfielder Madison Barney found defender Bianca Joswiak in the corner. Joswiak sent a cross to freshman Maxine Murchie in the box, but her shot was saved by Tulsa keeper Hayley Harryman.

Senior Nicolette Radovcic sent the Knights into halftime with some momentum when she connected for her ninth goal of the year in the 42nd minute. Megan Fish managed to advance the ball to Radovcic in a scramble in front of the net to put the Knights up 1-0.

Jewell added an insurance goal in the 71st minute for her fourth score of the year, but not without a couple of near-goals first.

In the 69th minute, Fish dished a ball to Jewell on the left side, but Harryman had a nice deflection. A minute later, Jewell struck again with a dart that Tulsa's keeper dived to save. Murchie rebounded with a header that hit the post, and Harryman was able to scoop up the ball before another Knight could threaten to score again.

Finally, Jewell hit the back of the net when defender Sokhara Goodall sent a cross from the right corner of the field to the top of the box where Jewell buried it into the far post.

Once again, the Knights' defense was impenetrable, refusing to allow a shot on goal throughout 90 minutes to lock up UCF's eighth shutout of the year.

The Knights hit the road Friday to face Colorado College at 6 p.m. before traveling to UTEP on Sunday at 1 p.m.
