The CFSB sent 15 cars and drivers to the 75th annual running of the weeklong event that culminated with the running of the World Finals on Saturday, July 21, and when all was said and done, the locals had claimed a Third Place Finish in the Super Stock World Champions by John Gahres and Sanford Derby Park earned the Rally Champs Favorite Race City award for the 9th time in the 12 times the award has been offered.
The 15 cars from the CFSBD were part of the 701 total racers at the event that represented most of the contiguous 48 states and Alaska as well as international entries from Japan, Germany, New Zealand and Canada.
Gahres had run in the 2011 AASBD as a Rally Super Stock Champion from Region 7, but got to move up to the World Championships this year after winning the Super Stock Division at the Local Derby back in May.
The Super Stock Division started with 117 cars and Gahres, who attends Space Coast High School in Cocoa, won four heats, but the 15-year-old got a little out of the groove in the final race and finished a close third in the Championship Heat.
The other two local representatives in the World Championships, Kathryn Lindsey in the Stock Division and Spencer Kostewicz in the Masters Division, both lost in their First Round Heats.
CFSBD had 12 cars representing Division 7, consisting of Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina, in the associate Rally Derby that attracted 422 entries.
Stock Rally driver Brittany Bisighini, Super Stock Rally driver Dakota Potts and Masters Rally driver Michelle Thiffault each won their first heats before going out in the second round.
Other locals in the Rally Derby were, in Stock Rally _ Haley Dabbs, Dawson Potts, Sean Rich and Zachary Kahler; in Super Stock Rally _ Sirjesim Bomm, Dylan Perry and Tessa Gagne; and in Masters Rally _ Allison Lindsey and Briana Walker.
