SunRail delivery

A schedule change has postponed the next delivery of rail along the Central Florida Commuter Rail Corridor — the line on which SunRail trains will run.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is now scheduled to take delivery of nearly 13 miles of rail beginning Tuesday, July 31 through Thursday, Aug. 2. It will take place between 3 a.m. and 11 a.m. each day.

Rail will be dropped off at 11 separate locations between Sanford, and Jamaica Lane—south of downtown Orlando. The rail delivery train could block railroad crossings in affected areas for up to 10 minutes while the rail is unloaded. The grade crossing at Monroe Avenue/CR 15, east of Interstate 4 in Sanford will be first to be affected.

This is the third delivery of continuous weld rail. Each rail section is 1,650 feet long and weighs 31 tons. The rail, for adding a second track, is from Columbia City, Indiana. Rails are being stockpiled alongside the existing tracks between rail crossings.

As noted, the delivery schedule is subject to change. Unexpected conditions or circumstances, as well as inclement weather, could have an impact.

Florida Native Plant Society

The Cuplet Fern Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will hold its August meeting Monday, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Sanford Garden Club at 200 Fairmont Dr. in Sanford.

The program will be about home landscape design and will have Mark Johnson, a landscape architect for a private firm and an adjunct professor at Rollins College. Johnson will speak about environmentally sustainable and culturally sensitive landscapes including native, xeroscape, reclamation and low impact designs.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information, please call 407-302-7616. There is no field trip planned for August.
