Thanks to a tip from the community, Sanford Police arrested a man Friday that they said robbed the downtown Sanford SunTrust bank of $200 Thursday morning.

Police said a tip through CrimeLine led them to Lawrence “Larry” Collins Jr., 53, who was still wearing the majority of the clothing from the robbery.

According to the police report, the suspect approached a teller in the bank around 9 a.m. and said, “Give me a strap of hundred dollar bills, this is a robbery. I have a gun.”

Security cameras at the bank were able to capture pictures of the man, which ultimately helped police catch him.

Police said the man confessed to the robbery and led investigators to the remainder of the evidence.

The SunTrust Bank at 200 W. 1st Street only opened the new location last week after a new building was built next to the old branch on the corner of Oak Avenue and 1st Street.

Collins was charged with robbery.
