FREE FISHING

Teaching children a lifelong hobby, instilling appreciation for our marine environment and providing fun, family outings are the objectives for the Kids’ Fishing Clinic in Cape Canaveral this Saturday.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will offer a free Kids’ Fishing Clinic for children between the ages of 5 and 15 on Saturday at Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal No. 3, 220 Christopher Columbus Dr., from 9 a.m. to noon. Advance registration is not required.

This free clinic enables young people to learn the basics of environmental stewardship, fishing ethics, angling skills and safety. In addition, environmental displays will offer participants a unique chance to experience Florida’s marine life firsthand.

Kids’ Fishing Clinics strive to achieve several goals, but the main objective is to create responsible marine-resource stewards by teaching children about the vulnerability of Florida’s marine ecosystems. In addition, organizers hope to teach fundamental saltwater fishing skills and provide participants a positive fishing experience.

Fishing equipment and bait will be provided for kids to use during the clinic, but organizers encourage children who own fishing tackle to bring it. A limited number of rods and reels will be given away to participants upon completion of the clinic.

If conditions allow, participants will have the opportunity to practice their new skills and fish from the pier. This event is a photo catch-and-release activity, and an adult must accompany all participants.

Individuals or companies interested in helping sponsor this event or volunteering at the clinic should call Skip Harris at 321-258-0578 or the FWC’s Nancy Fisher at 850-487-0554.

VOLLEYBALL CAMPS

Due to an overwhelming response in registration for the 2012 Summer Volleyball Camp, UCF head volleyball coach Todd Dagenais announced Tuesday that additional court space was added for the July 10-13 All-Skills Camp. However, online registrations are coming in at a record rate and the remaining camp space is expected to fill in the next 8-12 days.

People wishing to enroll their campers for the summer program are encouraged to visit www.centralfloridavolleyballcamps.com and register online, or call Camp Co-Director Arturo Rivera at 407-242-6603 directly to reserve their spot. Campers can select the option of staying overnight or commuting daily to the camp held entirely in the UCF Venue.

Dagenais recently announced the addition of ESPN broadcaster and volleyball analysis Kelli Tennant to the coaching lineup for this year's camp program. Tennant most recently served as volleyball color analysis in the NCAA Regional Finals in Hawaii, and also worked as a sportscaster for MSG Varsity network.

In addition to the All-Skills program, Dagenais will host a Position Specific Clinic on July 14 and an Elite College Prep Camp from July 15-18.

"The position specific camp is a great opportunity for outside hitters, liberos, middle hitters, and setters, to learn all the small details of their position from UCF staff and players," said Dagenais. “Encouraging campers to stay the extra day and train with the Knights, those campers also attending the All-Skills and Elite camps will be given a discounted rate on the Position Specific Clinics."

Rounding out the on-campus portion of the summer camp program will be the 2012 Elite College Prep Camp from July 15-18. Enrollment is limited to only 56 campers and will be staffed by college coaches and players, as well as international professional players and coaches.

For those high school teams that may be looking for a very unique and personal training opportunity, Dagenais will be holding a limited number of Satellite Camps throughout June, July, and August.

High School coaches and administrators are encouraged to call Arturo Rivera directly for additional information and open dates on the satellite camps.
