Sanford Police announced Friday they made an arrest in the shooting and murder of 18-year-old Pernicia Jones.

Jones was killed late July 29 while she was riding in a vehicle with friends at Oleander Avenue and 14th Street, police said. Another man, Marvin Joe, was also injured in the shooting.

In the past two weeks Sanford police have worked with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate the crime, said Capt. Robert O'Connor.

Witnesses to the crime also told police a man wielding a rifle shot into the car. A lead came when the sheriff's office arrested a man last week for outstanding warrants and found a rifle in his possession they believed was used in the crime, said O'Connor.

On Friday FDLE laboratory analysis confirmed the rifle seized from the man was the rifle used to kill Jones.

Dorian Calloway, 23, was charged with second-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and shooting into an occupied vehicle. Additional charges may be pending, said O'Connor.

Calloway is currently being held in the Seminole County jail.

Police had previously stated that the shooting was gang-related, and O’Connor said Friday the shooting may have occurred in a “gang battle.”

He said, "This investigation is not over. We are still looking at aspects of it."

Family and friends of Jones gathered at the press conference Friday where police made the announcement of the arrest, however some were still not satisfied with the charges. Deloris Totten, Jones’ grandmother, said she couldn’t understand why Calloway was only charged with second-degree murder.

“It needs to be first-degree,” she said.

Jones’ mother Marvell Jones also spoke during the press conference and relayed her thanks to the community, but said she was still upset over the killing of her daughter.

“I just want to say thank you to the community,” she said. “My heart’s hurting. I don’t know much more I can take right now.”
