What is Juneteenth? Simply stated, Juneteenth is the oldest recognized celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States.

Dating back to 1865 and origins in Galveston, Texas, Juneteenth has always been observed on or around June 19; the day slaves in Galveston, Texas learned they had been freed by President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is a family-oriented celebration that focuses on the community and recounting stories of the past
