Hopper Academy

Historic St. James AME Church will be hosting a community meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18 at 819 Cypress Avenue in Sanford, regarding the restoration and rehabilitation of Hopper Academy, located in the Georgetown community of Sanford.

The purpose of the meeting is to hear from the community on what the proposed use of Hopper Academy should be. The goal is to discuss the future of this significant building as it relates to African American culture and history in the Georgetown community.

Andrew Thomas, Sr. Project Manager, Office of the City Manager, City of Sanford, will be facilitating the meeting.

Tire amnesty day

Want to prevent the spread of disease from mosquitoes? Then take advantage of Seminole County's Tire Amnesty on Saturday, July 21 and recycle your waste tires free of charge.

From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tire Amnesty Day, Seminole County residents can take up to 10 tires to the Central Transfer Station, 1950 SR 419 in Longwood, or the Seminole County Landfill, 1930 E. Osceola Road in Geneva, for disposal.

The event is for private households only; businesses are not eligible to participate. If you have any questions, please call 407-665-2260.

Housing workshop

Goldenrule Housing is assisting families to become a first time home owner. They can help you to qualify for a mortgage and down payment assistance. In order to receive the down payment assistance you must attend a first time homebuyer class.

This class will help you to qualify for the NSP down payment up to $80,000.00 in assistance and also the State Bond Program up to $5,000.00 in down payment assistance. The next class is July 23, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Sanford Library.
