The city has contracted with Waters Consulting Group to conduct a national search for the next chief of police of Sanford. The search is anticipated to be done by the end of the year.
Interim Chief Richard Myers is currently serving in the position an has been since May when the city hired him in temporary capacity. Myers was chosen after former chief Bill Lee Jr. stepped down in March following national attention to the Trayvon Martin case.
Lee was ultimately let go in mid-June by City Manager Norton Bonaparte.
The newest chief in Sanford will be the sixth person to run the Sanford Police Department since December 2010. After former police chief Brian Tooley retired early in January 2011, the department has been run by Seminole County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Steve Harriett, Lee, Capt. Darren Scott and Myers.
In order to gain citizens’ input the Waters Consulting Group will conduct a public forum to find out what abilities, characteristics, traits and skill set the community would like to see in the new chief of police.
The public forum is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. in City Hall Chambers at 300 N. Park Ave.
