Under the direction of Interim Public Works Director Bilal Iftikhar, Solid Waste Manager Emily McCabe and her staff help to ensure the streets of Sanford are free from waste so citizens and visitors can enjoy the vibrant community of Sanford.
Aside from the convenient garbage collection service provided to residents, in support of this service, each year, during the months of April and October the City encourages the community to participate in the Community Clean Up Program. At no extra charge, this is a perfect opportunity for residents to clean out their closets, garages, and trim their trees with the added perk of placing the debris loose at their curbside or alley for removal.
Your piles of debris should be manageable enough for two people to take care of it. Debris should not be bigger than 20 cubic yards and should not weigh more than 50 pounds per pile. Debris should also not be more than five feet in length or five inches in diameter.
Hazardous waste and construction items are not included in the Community Clean Up. For removal of appliances and tires (8 tires maximum) please call 407-688-5089.
Sanford’s residential Community Clean Up Program collects an average of 70 tons of debris from residents each April and October. The Community Clean Up dates are:
• Saturday, Oct. 6 – Residential units located east of U.S. 17-92 and north of 20th Street
• Saturday, Oct. 13 – Residential units located east of U.S. 17-92 and south of 20th Street
• Saturday, Oct. 20 – Residential units located west of U.S. 17-92 and north of 25th Street
• Saturday, Oct. 27 – Residential units located west of U.S. 17-92 and south of 25th Street.
Citizens not residing within the City limits of Sanford should contact Seminole County for collection information.
Sanford’s Public Works Solid Waste Division is creating an “ADOPT-A-BLOCK PROGRAM” for residents who are interested in keeping their block and our community litter free. Gather a neighbor, friend, relative or coworker and become one of Sanford’s Clean Teams! Once your team is assembled, contact the Solid Waste Division at 407-688-5089 to coordinate a trash removal site and to provide you with free trash bags.
The city also has a successful recycling program. The city was able to accumulate enough revenue from the recyclable materials and solid waste to forgo the residential collection price increase to our residents this year.
An average of 104 tons of recyclable materials is collected monthly from the City of Sanford residents and is recycled rather than disposed of in the landfill. With the help of citizens like you all of us can help protect the environment and improve the quality of life we all share living on this planet.
An unlimited amount of recyclable material may be placed curbside for collection in city provided 14-gallon recycle bins. The hauler will leave behind all materials not accepted in the program and a tag indicating the reason will be left.
Recyclables are collected once per week; scheduled day depends on service location. Waste Pro of Florida, Inc. is the City of Sanford’s Solid Waste Collection and Disposal Hauler.
Refuse and recycle service is mandatory for all residential properties. City hall recycles too! Green’s the word, the word, and is the word!
